Group Walks vs Solo Walks: Which Is Right for Your Dog?

By Admin User ·

When you're choosing a dog walking service, one of the first decisions you'll face is whether to go for a group walk or a solo walk. Both have their place, and understanding the difference can make a real impact on your dog's happiness and wellbeing.

What Is a Group Walk?

A group walk is exactly what it sounds like — your dog walks alongside a small number of other dogs, supervised by a professional walker. At Walkies & Wags, we keep our groups to a maximum of four dogs. This is significantly smaller than many walking services, and it's a deliberate choice. Four dogs allows for genuine supervision, individual attention, and safe social interaction.

Group walks typically last around 60 minutes. We collect each dog from their home, drive to a suitable walking location (usually one of Bristol's brilliant parks or green spaces), walk for an hour, then return each dog home.

What Is a Solo Walk?

A solo walk is a one-on-one walk with just your dog and the walker. It's a completely tailored experience — the route, pace, duration, and activities are all adapted to your dog's specific needs. Solo walks are ideal for dogs who need individual attention, whether that's because of their temperament, age, health, or training needs.

When Group Walks Are the Better Choice

Socialisation. For friendly, social dogs, group walks provide valuable interaction with other dogs. This is especially important for dogs who spend long periods alone during the day. Regular social contact helps prevent isolation-related behaviour problems and keeps social skills sharp.

Stimulation. Walking with other dogs is simply more interesting. Dogs play differently in groups — they chase, they wrestle (gently), they explore together. The dynamic energy of a small group provides mental stimulation that a solo walk can't always replicate.

Value. Group walks are typically less expensive than solo walks because the cost is shared between clients. If your dog is happy and confident in a group setting, this is often the best value option for regular daily walks.

Confidence building. For dogs who are mildly nervous or shy, carefully managed group walks with calm, friendly dogs can actually help build confidence over time.

When Solo Walks Are the Better Choice

Reactive dogs. If your dog is reactive to other dogs (lunging, barking, showing stress signals around other dogs), a group walk is not appropriate. Solo walks allow reactive dogs to enjoy their walk without the stress of being around other dogs. With time and training, some reactive dogs may eventually transition to small groups, but this should never be rushed.

Elderly or injured dogs. Older dogs or those recovering from injury need a gentler pace. Solo walks mean the walk is entirely tailored to what your dog can manage, without being dragged along by younger, more energetic companions.

Puppies in training. Puppies who are still learning lead manners, recall, and basic commands often benefit from solo walks where the walker can focus entirely on reinforcing good behaviour. Our Puppy Walk service is specifically designed for young dogs.

Dogs with specific needs. Some dogs have medical conditions, mobility issues, or behavioural needs that require one-on-one attention. Solo walks ensure these needs are always met.

Can My Dog Do Both?

Absolutely — and many of our regular clients do exactly this. A typical setup might be three group walks per week for socialisation and exercise, plus one solo walk for focused training or a more intensive adventure. We're always happy to create a schedule that works for your dog's specific needs.

Not Sure? Start With a Meet and Greet

If you're unsure which option is best for your dog, the best thing to do is arrange a meet and greet. We'll spend some time with your dog, observe their temperament, and recommend the best walk type based on what we see. There's never any pressure to choose one over the other — we want to find what makes your dog happiest.

Every dog is different, and that's exactly how it should be. Whether your dog is a social butterfly who lives for group adventures or a gentle soul who prefers one-on-one attention, we've got a walk that's perfect for them.
